This turned into writing our own Piggie and Elephant books. After reading several of the books, we talked about using expression as we read and adjusting our voices based on Piggie and Elephant's faces. Reading these books aloud is really fun, and I wanted to give the students the opportunity to do this as well. We decided to invite in the other first grade and second grade classes. Partnerships in our room practiced one Piggie and Elephant book with one student reading for Piggie and another reading for Elephant. We shared this book along with the books we wrote with the other classes.
I also incorporated activities throughout the day. For math we weighed all 18 books, measured the height, and length of the books laid out. I also challenged the students to count up all the words in one of the books.
Partnerships came up with four questions they would like Mo Willems (the author) to answer. Some great questions were:
What is your favorite Piggie and Elephant book?
How old were you when you started writing?
How long does it take you to write a book?
How do you come up with your ideas.
At the end of the day the students made their own Piggie and Elephant BINGO boards and we enjoyed a couple rounds of BINGO based on the book titles.
What a day!
