Volcano Unit Celebration

For the last few weeks we have been learning about the layers of the earth, rocks, and volcanoes.  We ended the unit by making our own volcanoes.   The students have been on a serious mission to examine every rock they cross paths with at recess, and read as many books as they can on these topics! The students are fascinated by volcanoes and love this project!
The first step is to create your volcano structure using a toilet paper tube, a paper plate, newspaper, and masking tape.  The students then paint their volcano add additional painted details to make it look like lava is flowing out.  We put a final coat of Mod Podge on it to seal it up.  Due to our materials, the class decided that most of the volcanoes looked like shield volcanoes.

Today we erupted them using baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring!  Most of the eruptions were pretty mild like shield volcanoes.
